An upgraded electricity primary substation worth millions of Ghana cedis (GHC 15,200,000) has been inaugurated in Hohoe by Electricity Company of Ghana.

The project, fully funded by ECG, is in fulfillment of the company’s efforts at improving power supply in the Hohoe area.  

Over the decades, as demand for power supply in Hohoe rose, service got poorer. Transformers went off frequently, currents went low, ECG routinely shut down power, and that was even before the current national energy problem set in.  

Work On Volta Portion of Eastern Corridor Stalls as Hohoe Route Remains in Deplorable State

Tim Dzamboe of the Daily Graphic reports that work on Volta Region’s portion of the Eastern Corridor has stalled. 

The report states that contractors for the project have completely withdrawn their construction equipment from all sites. 

The decision was reportedly prompted by nonpayment of contractors since January 2017. 

COCOBOD, a financier of the project, has suspended sponsorship, according to the report.

Amewu Gets a Rock Star Honor in Gbi

This past weekend in the Hohoe area of the Gbi State, something spectacular happened: A son of the land, John Peter Amewu, got the highest respect anyone has seen in the community in recent years, if not of all time.

This follows Amewu’s appointment by the Akufo-Addo government right after the president took office in January 2017. 

Johnny, as he’s affectionately called by family and friends, had earned the reputation of an astute politician as a former District Chief Executive and Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party. 

Amewu had a successful vetting and became the substantive minister – presiding over lands and natural resources.

But for the Gbi Traditional Area (Gbi Dzigbe), it goes deeper even. This is the first time a son of the land was duly recognized by any government for the top position in a ministry. They couldn’t hold back the feeling.

Word about a formal celebration of Amewu by the Gbi Traditional Area however came with mixed feelings for some.

Ken Ofori-Atta Delivers One of Ghana's Most Anticipated Budget Statements

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, presented the country’s 2017 budget statement to parliament on Thursday, March 2, 2017.

The much anticipated revenue and spending proposal, the first by the Akufo-Addo administration, is themed “Sowing The Seeds For Growth & Jobs.”

The 2017 budget highlights five key areas that constitute the basis for the new administration’s economic policy.  These include a review of 2016 fiscal year and proposed initiatives for 2017 and beyond.

With its daring tax reform details which include extensive cuts and total eliminations, the proposed budget statement has been hailed as a much-needed economic relief for ordinary Ghanaians and a potential driving force for private sector growth. But it has also been criticized by some as dangerous for the country's economic progress.

The proposal is expected to pass amid high expectation for policy implementation.

Mahama's "Hohoe Promise" Not Gabusu's House; It's A Palace For The Paramountcy.

On his Oct 19 trip to Hohoe, as part of his 

campaign tour of the Volta Region, 

President Mahama, while going over a list of promises for the area, stated that his administration was set to repair and restore the chief's "palace."

But as Gbi Viwo noted, the president's statement, which painted the picture of a building that needs fixing, generated headlines that pointed to the paramount chief's property that got destroyed by arsonist in 2012. The problem is, the said building has already been reconstructed by government.

Is the NDC Government Confused Between Togbega Gabusu's Residence & The Gbi Traditional Area's Palace?

On his latest visit to the Gbi Traditional Area today,  October 19, 2016, President John Dramani Mahama is said to have promised the people of the area that he will repair their chief's palace.

This seems likely to be in reference to the damage caused to the residence of Togbega Gabusu VI in 2012 by members of the Hohoe Zongo community who set the paramount chief's house on fire, following a disagreement about the burial place of their imam - an incident that led to a deadly clash between Zongo and the rest of the Gbi community.

The said promise by the president however brings up questions as to which of the damaged buildings associated with Gabusu and the Gbi Dzigbe paramountcy the same government was reported to have finished reconstructing in December 2015?

The Peki Government Hospital's Emergency Problem

Two Months After This Highlight

Considering the high level of vehicular accidents in Ghana, one

would think that emergency units would be a top infrastructure priority.

However, reports like the one by Starr FM's Lambert Atsivor, which states: "The Peki Government Hospital in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region is in dire need of an Emergency unit to enable it attend swiftly to cases of such nature," are all too common in the country.


As the report states:

The Peki Government Hospital is one of two major health facilities along the eastern corridor road and it records a monthly average of 3 major accident cases.
