Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken
Ofori-Atta, presented the country’s 2017 budget statement to parliament on Thursday, March 2, 2017.
The much anticipated revenue and spending proposal, the first by the Akufo-Addo administration, is themed
“Sowing The Seeds For Growth & Jobs.”
The 2017 budget highlights
five key areas that constitute the basis for the new administration’s economic
policy. These include a review of 2016
fiscal year and proposed initiatives for 2017 and
beyond.
With its daring tax reform details which include extensive cuts and total
eliminations, the proposed budget statement has been hailed as a much-needed economic relief for ordinary
Ghanaians and a potential driving force for private sector growth. But it has also been criticized
by some as dangerous for the country's economic progress.
The proposal is expected to
pass amid high expectation for policy implementation.
